South African AIDS vaccine testing starts

Assoc Prof Carolyn Williamson & Prof Anna-Lise Williamson Two South African-developed HIV vaccines have begun clinical testing in the United States. The South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI), which is a lead programme of the Medical Research Council (MRC) supported by the South African government, has announced the start of the phase I safety trial in the US. HIV/AIDS threatens construction industry

Harry Lake A compulsory, industry-wide initiative needs to be adopted by the South African construction industry to fight against rising HIV/AIDS prevalence among its workers. This was recommended by UCT researchers in a peer-reviewed paper, which used data collected in tests on over 10 000 construction workers from 55 companies nationwide. Read more...
