Statement by the Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis on the occasion of the International Youth Day
Democratic values must be embraced not imposed “Democracy is resilient, but it is not irreversible. Protecting the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which define and safeguard our freedom, requires constant effort and vigilance. This has always been the philosophy behind the Council of Europe work with young people. The objective is not to tell young people what to do and what to believe in, but to create the circumstances in which they can make up their own minds, set their own objectives and act to achieve them. The values of a truly free and democratic society must be embraced. They cannot be imposed.” more...
