The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) was founded and financed in 1954 by members of the medical profession and was registered as a non-profit making company in 1955. It is the custodian of the quality of medical care in South Africa and is unique in the world in that it embraces 27 constituent Colleges representing all the disciplines of medicine and dentistry.

The excellent facilities in the buildings of The CMSA in Cape Town and Johannesburg, consisting of lecture rooms, committee rooms, reception rooms and kitchens, are available to medical and dental bodies for symposia, seminars, courses and lectures, but the activities are restricted to academic functions.
The CMSA also has an office in Durban and is in the process of acquiring additional property to extend the facilities.

Examinations
The CMSA has the unique structure of containing all medical and dental specialities within a single framework and therefore has the potential to foster aspects of medical education and medical professionalism which are common to all disciplines.

The specialist qualifications obtained through The CMSA are known as Fellowships. These qualifications are recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as acceptable for specialist registration and are known throughout the world. There is a qualification designed especially for family practitioners, called Membership of the College of Family Practitioners, which is registerable as an additional qualification.

For those medical and dental practitioners who do not wish to specialise, the CMSA offers Higher Diploma and Diploma qualifications which are registered by the Statutory Registering Body of the Republic of South Africa as additional qualifications. There is also an additional qualification for those who obtain a Certificate in one of the subspecialities.
